Many people are faced with everyday computer problems that are easy to fix, but are unable to diagnose the actual problem. While there are many problems a computer will be faced with, this article will tell you where to look for common problems.

steps

1
Check the POST. POST stands for Power On Self Test. This is generally the first or second thing that appears on a computer after turning on the power. This appears before the operating system begins to load. The POST will display any problems found with hardware that makes the computer unable to boot, POST may also display problems with hardware that allow the computer to boot, but not operate at its full capacity during

  1. 2
Notice the load time of the OS (operating system). A longer than usual load time may indicate seek errors (or other errors) in the hard drive.

  1. 3
Notice any graphics problems once the OS has loaded. Reduced graphics may indicate driver failures or hardware failures with graphic cards.
  2. 4
Perform an auditory test. An auditory test is an unorthodox, but still effective way of judging how hard a computer is working. With the computer on and running, play any decent length audio file (usually above 30 secs). If the audio is choppy or slow, it usually means that the processor is working at an elevated level, or there is not enough RAM to run all programs loading. Changing the startup sound is a great way to apply this test. Another issue associated with choppy sounds is PIO (Programmed Input/Output) Mode. This affects how the hard drive reads and writes data from a drive. Switching to DMA allows for faster reads and writes, and can sometimes repair choppy audio.
  1. 5
Check any newly installed hardware. Many operating systems, especially Windows, can conflict with new drivers. The driver may be badly written, or it may conflict with another process. Windows will usually notify you about devices that are causing a problem, or have a problem. To check this use the Device Manager, this can be accessed by entering the Control Panel, clicking the System icon, clicking the Hardwaretab, and clicking on Device Manager. Use this to check and arrange the properties of hardware.
  1. 6
Check any newly installed software. Software may require more resources than the system can provide. Chances are that if a problem begins after software starts, the software is causing it. If the problem appears directly upon startup, it may be caused by software that starts automatically on boot.

  1. 7
Check RAM and CPU consumption. A common problem is a choppy or sluggish system. If a system is choppy it is good practice to see if a program is consuming more resources than the computer can provide. An easy way to check this is to use the Task Manager, right click on the taskbar select Task Manager, and click the Processestab. The CPU column contains a number that indicates the percentage of CPU the process is consuming. The Mem Usage column indicates how much memory a process is consuming.
  2. 8
Listen to the computer, if the hard drive is scratching or making loud noises, shut off the computer and have a professional diagnose the hard drive. Listen to the CPU fan, this comes on a high speed when the CPU is working hard, and can tell you when the computer is working beyond its capacity.
  3. 9
Run a virus and malware scan. Performance problems can be caused by malware on the computer. Running a virus scan can unearth any problems. Use a commonly updated virus scanner (such as Norton Antivirus or Avast! Antivirus) and a commonly updated malware scanner (such as Spybot Search & Destroy).
  4. 10
Check for the problem in safe mode. As a last ditch effort, check the problem in safe mode. To enter safe mode, tap F8 repeatedly during POST (this works on most systems). If the problem persists in safe mode, it is a fair bet that the operating system itself is to blame.

Is your computer turning off by itself immediately or at some point before the operating system loads? If so, you may be facing anything from an electrical short to a serious hardware issue.
Since there are several reasons that your PC might be shutting off by itself during the boot process, it's important that you step through a logical troubleshooting process like the one I've described below.
Important: If your computer is in fact turning on and staying on, even if you don't see anything on screen, see my How to Fix a Computer That Won't Turn On for a more applicable troubleshooting guide.
Time Required: From minutes to hours depending on why the computer turns off so quickly after being turned on
Here's How:
  1. Troubleshoot the cause of the beep code, assuming you're lucky enough to hear one. A beep code will give you a very good idea of exactly where to look for the cause of your computer turning off.
If you don't fix the problem that way, you can always return here and continue troubleshooting with the more generic information below.
 2. Verify that the power supply voltage switch is set correctly. If the input voltage for thepower supply does not match    the correct setting for your country, your computer may not stay powered on.

Chances are your computer wouldn't power on at all if this switch is wrong but an incorrect power supply voltage might also cause your computer turn off by itself.

3. Check for causes of electrical shorts inside your computer. This is very often the cause of the problem when the computer powers on for a second or two but then powers off completely.

Important: It's very, very important that you spend the time necessary to inspect the inside of your computer for issues that can cause shorting. If you don't take the time to troubleshoot this possibility thoroughly you may end up missing a simple electrical short and instead performing costly hardware replacements later on for no good reason.

4. Test your power supply. Just because your computer came on for a few moments doesn't mean that the power supply unit in your computer is working properly. In my experience, the power supply tends to cause more problems than any other piece of hardware and is very often the cause of a computer turning off by itself.

Replace your power supply if it fails any of your tests.

Tip: If you do end up replacing the PSU, keep the computer plugged in for at least 5 minutes before you try powering it on. This gives time for the CMOSbattery to charge a little.

5. Test the power button on the front of your computer's case. If the power button is shorting out or even just sticking to the case, it might be the reason your computer is turning off by itself.

Replace the power button if it fails your testing or if you suspect it's not working properly.

6. Reseat everything inside of your computer. Reseating will reestablish all of the connections inside your computer which may have wiggled loose over time.
Try reseating the following and then see if your computer stays on:
  • Reseat all internal data and power cables
  • Reseat the memory modules
  • Reseat any expansion cards
Note: Unplug and reattach your keyboard and mouse as well. There is little chance that either one is the cause of this problem but we shouldn't overlook them while we're reseating everything else.
7. Reseat the CPU only if you suspect that it might have come loose or might not have been installed properly.
Note: I call this out separately only because the chance of a CPU coming loose is very slim and because installing one is a sensitive task. This isn't a big concern if you're careful so don't worry!
8. Start your PC with essential hardware only. The purpose here is to remove as much hardware as possible while still maintaining your computer's ability to power on.
  • If your computer turns on, and stays on, with essential hardware only, proceed to Step 9.
  • If your computer continues to turn off by itself, proceed to Step 10.
Important: This troubleshooting step is easy enough for anyone to complete, takes no special tools, and could give a lot of very valuable information. This isn't a step to skip if, after all the steps above, your computer is still shutting off by itself.

9. Reinstall each piece of nonessential hardware, one component at a time, testing your computer after each installation.

Since your PC powered on with only the essential hardware installed, those components are working properly. This means that one of the devices you removed is causing your computer to turn off by itself. By installing each device back into your computer and testing after each installation, you'll eventually find the hardware that caused your problem.

Replace the faulty hardware once you've identified it. These Hardware Installation Videosmight come in handy as you're reinstalling your hardware.

10. Test your PC using a Power On Self Test card. If your computer continues to power off by itself with nothing but essential PC hardware installed, a POST card will help identify which piece of remaining hardware is to blame.

If you don't already own and are unwilling to purchase a POST card, skip to Step

11. Replace each piece of essential hardware in your computer with a "known good" identical or equivalent spare piece of hardware, one component at a time, to determine which piece of hardware is causing your computer to shut off automatically. Test after each hardware replacement to determine which device is faulty.

Note: Most normal computer users don't have a collection of working spare computer parts at their disposals. My advice is to revisit Step 10. A POST card is not expensive and is a much more reasonable approach than stocking spare computer parts.

Finally, if all else fails, you'll likely need to seek professional help from a computer repair service or from your computer manufacturer's technical support.

Unfortunately, if you're without a POST card and also without spare parts to swap in and out, you're left not knowing which piece of your essential computer hardware is faulty. In these cases you have little option than to rely on individuals or companies that do have these resources.

Note: See the last tip below for information on requesting more help.

Tips:

  1. Are you troubleshooting this issue on a computer that you've just built? If so, triple check your configuration! There is a significantly greater chance that your computer is turning off by itself due to a misconfiguration and not an actual hardware failure.
    2. Did I miss a troubleshooting step that helped you (or might help someone else) fix a
computer that's turning off by itself during the boot process? Let me know and I'd be happy to include the
    information here .

   3. Is your computer still shutting off automatically even after following the troubleshooting
above? See Get More Help for information about contacting me on social networks or via
email, posting on tech support forums, and more. Be sure to tell me what you've already done to try to fix the problem.

We wanted to shed some light on system software update version 1.50 for PS4, which will launch simultaneously with the system’s official North American launch on November 15th, 2013. By updating to system software version 1.50, you’ll be able to experience a variety of new features in addition to the basic functions of PS4.
The system software update 1.50 is approximately 300 MB, and will include the following features:
    • Remote Play
Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link (Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home). We anticipate that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play. The latest PS Vita system software version, to be released soon, will be required to use PS4 Link.

    • Second Screen
Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

    • Record, take screenshots, and upload gameplay effortlessly
The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

    • Broadcast and spectate gameplay
The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

    • Play as you download
This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

    • Multi log-in
A maximum of four users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multiplayer game together on a single PS4 system.

    • Party (Voice chat)
By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

    • Face recognition and voice commands
Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features; please refer to PS4’s online manual for recognizable voice commands.

    • Background music player
Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music. Learn more about Music Unlimited here.

    • Online Multiplayer
PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

  • Blu-ray Disc and DVD player
Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.

Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. We will provide additional information about system software update version 1.50 and features available at the PS4 system’s North America launch, and features that will be available after launch, in the near future.

Sony announced it sold one million PlayStation 4s on its first day, and now the company has revealedthat it shifted 2.1 million units of its next-gen console during November… well, for the 16 days that the PS4 was on sale.
That’s a good way towards the 5 million target that it is aiming to reach by March 2014, and it comes at a time when the PS4 is still not widely available in all parts of the world: Japanese gamers must wait until February 22, for example.
Arch-rival Microsoft also sold one million units of its Xbox One console on launch day, but we’ve yet to hear of an updated figure from the company.

Facebook is reportedly closing in on its first acquisition in India, according to local reports that link the social networking giant to Little Eye Labs, a Bangalore-based company that produces a mobile app crash testing service.
Business Standard reports that Facebook “is in talks” to acquire the startup, which graduated the first GSF India accelerator program last year, with a deal expected to be sealed within a few weeks. No price has been reported, however.
Little Eye Labs is founded by ex-IBM and Apple employees and is a testing service like Crashalytics, the company Twitter acquired earlier this year, but it is expressly aimed at gauging mobile apps performance before they are released to the public.
Facebook acquired Israeli app analytics firm Onavo in October, and, as a company with multiple applications available for iOS and Android, there are plenty of reasons Little Eye might have caught admiring glances from Facebook.
Any deal would not only mark Facebook’s first acquisition in India, but would be a breakthrough for the Indian tech community. Beyond being a notable exit for GSF India — and a proof point for founder Rajesh Sawhney’s belief that India can provide world-class technology and services — it would represent a first success for iSpirit, a software industry roundtable designed to foster relationships with India’s tech startups, which includes Little Eye among its members.
Facebook reportedly offered no comment in response to a request from Business Standard. We’ve contacted Facebook and Little Eye Labs and will update this post with any comment we’re given.

Facebook today announced tweaks to its News Feed algorithm that focus on articles. In particular, the company is looking to surface more articles that get clicks on mobile devices as well as resurface articles that have received comments from your friends.
For the former, the company has made two rather inane statements: “We’ve noticed that people enjoy seeing articles on Facebook” and “so we’re now paying closer attention to what makes for high quality content.” PR talk aside, Facebook says it is now taking into consideration how often articles are clicked on the mobile News Feed.
This means that if your friends post, Like, and click articles on their mobile devices, you should start to notice more links to articles in your own News Feed. This will apply to both the desktop News Feed and the mobile News Feed, although Facebook says you should see a bigger increase in articles showing up on your smartphones and tablets.

Facebook teamed up with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI) to bust a criminal organization responsible for infecting 11 million computers and thus causing an estimated $850 million in losses. Thanks to the company’s help, the DOJ, the FBI and international law enforcement partners, on Tuesday announced the successful dismantling of the crime ring.
10 individuals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, New Zealand, Peru, the UK, and the US were arrested. In addition to handcuffs, the operation included the execution of numerous search warrants and interviews, identifying international cybercrime rings linked to multiple variants of the Yahos malwarethat made up the Butterfly botnet. The threat in question stole (and still does if you manage to get infected) computer users’ credit card, bank account details, and other personal identifiable information.
So where does Facebook come in? Throughout the investigation, the company’s security team helped law enforcement by identifying the root cause of the malware, the perpetrators, and those affected by the attacks. Yahos targeted Facebook users from 2010 to October 2012, and the social network’s security systems were able to detect affected accounts and then provide tools to remove these threats.
In addition to Facebook and the aforementioned US organizations, this was a massive joint effort. The FBI’s Cyber Division worked with its International Operations Division, as well as various offices across the US. Furthermore, multiple international organizations also helped out, including Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Republika Srpska Ministry of Interior, Republic of Croatia, Ministry of Interior General Police Directorate, National Police Office for Suppression of Corruption and Organized Crime, New Zealand Police, Peruvian National Police, and the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency.
The FBI offered the following advice to Facebook users (and the public in general):
It is recommended that computer users update their applications and operating system on a regular basis to reduce the risk of compromise and perform regular anti-virus scanning of their computer system. It is also helpful to disconnect personal computers from the Internet when the machines are not in use.
While we’re not exactly sure that the final point of advice will take off, the general rules of thumbs are: don’t click on anything you aren’t sure about, and make sure to keep your software updated.
